How Many Work Hours in a Year? (2026 Full-Time Numbers)
How many work hours are in a year, month, and week in 2026: the 2,080-hour standard, hours actually worked after PTO and holidays.
The Short Answer: 2,080 Hours
A standard American full-time schedule — 8 paid hours a day, 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year — is 2,080 work hours in a year. That is the number payroll systems use to convert a salary into an hourly rate, and the number your employer almost certainly used when it priced your job.
It is also not the number of hours you will actually work. Those two figures do different jobs, and confusing them is where salary math, capacity planning, and overtime disputes all go wrong.
Every Period At A Glance
| Period | Full-time hours |
| --- | --- |
| Day | 8 |
| Week | 40 |
| Biweekly pay period | 80 |
| Semi-monthly pay period | 86.67 |
| Month (average) | 173.33 |
| Quarter | 520 |
| Year (scheduled) | 2,080 |
| Year (after 11 holidays + 10 PTO days) | 1,912 |
Run your own schedule through the work hours calculator if you work anything other than five eights — 4/10s, three twelves, and part-time schedules all land somewhere else.
Scheduled Hours vs Hours Actually Worked
Scheduled hours are what the roster promises. Use them for salary conversion, benefits eligibility, and headcount.
Hours actually worked are what the Fair Labor Standards Act cares about. Subtract paid holidays, vacation, sick days, and unpaid meal periods and a typical full-time employee works around 1,900 hours a year rather than 2,080.
The distinction matters for one reason above all: only hours actually worked count toward overtime. A week with 32 worked hours plus 8 hours of holiday pay shows 40 paid hours on the stub and owes no overtime. A week with 41 worked hours plus a holiday owes an overtime hour, no matter how the paid total looks.
Why 173.33 Hours A Month Is An Average, Not A Month
Divide 2,080 by 12 and you get 173.33. No individual month contains exactly that. Months range from about 160 hours (20 weekdays) to 184 hours (23 weekdays). Salaried employees never notice; hourly employees paid semi-monthly notice immediately, because two identical-looking pay periods can hold different numbers of shifts.
The rule that keeps this straight: overtime is measured in the workweek, never the month or the pay period. A 46-hour week inside a light month still owes 6 overtime hours.
The Hidden Hours That Push You Past 40
Schedules say 40. Real weeks often run longer, and the extra time rarely appears anywhere:
- Booting systems, opening tills, and pre-shift setup
- Donning required protective gear or uniforms on site
- Mandatory meetings, huddles, and training
- Shift handoff and report
- Short rest breaks under 20 minutes, which are always paid
- Answering work messages and calls after clocking out
Ten unrecorded minutes a day is 43 hours a year. On a $25 rate with an overtime multiplier attached, that is over $1,600 — from minutes nobody thought worth recording. Total your real punches with the time card calculator before deciding your week is 40 hours.
Work Hours By Schedule Pattern
| Pattern | Hours per week | Hours per year |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 5 × 8 | 40 | 2,080 |
| 4 × 10 | 40 | 2,080 |
| 3 × 12 | 36 | 1,872 |
| 4 × 12 | 48 | 2,496 |
| Pitman / 2-3-2 rotation | 42 average | 2,184 |
| 30-hour part time | 30 | 1,560 |
Note what the 4 × 12 row means: that schedule is built with roughly 8 overtime hours every week. It is not an occasional surprise, it is the design. If you work a rotation, the shift calculator blends any night or weekend differential into the regular rate the way the law requires.
Hours And FTE
Divide weekly hours by 40 to get full-time equivalent. A 30-hour week is 0.75 FTE, a 48-hour week is 1.2 FTE. Two details worth knowing:
- The Affordable Care Act treats 30 hours a week as full-time for coverage purposes, whatever your employer calls the role.
- FTE has nothing to do with exempt status. A 1.0 FTE salaried employee can still be entitled to overtime — exemption depends on duties and salary level, not hours.
Using Hours To Check Your Own Pay
- . Count worked hours per week, not per pay period, and include the setup and handoff minutes.
- . Compare to 40. Anything above is overtime unless you are genuinely exempt.
- . Check the overtime rate. It is 1.5 times your *regular rate*, which includes nondiscretionary bonuses and shift differentials — not just your base rate.
- . Price it. The overtime pay calculator applies your state's rules, including daily overtime in California, Alaska, Nevada, and Colorado.
Common Questions
Is 2,080 the right divisor for my hourly rate? For payroll conversion, yes. For your *effective* rate, divide salary by hours actually worked — someone paid for 2,080 while working 2,300 earns about 10% less per hour than the stated figure.
How many working days in 2026? 261 weekdays, minus 11 typical federal holidays leaves 250 working days for most full-time schedules.
Do lunch breaks count? Not if they are a genuine 30-minute period fully relieved of duty. If you cover the phone or the floor while eating, they count and must be paid.
Can my employer average two weeks? No. Each workweek stands alone for overtime purposes.
