The One-Line Answer

Overtime is your hourly rate multiplied by 1.5. At $15 an hour, every overtime hour pays $22.50. At $16 it is $24.00, at $16.50 it is $24.75, and at $17 it is $25.50. Under the federal FLSA that premium starts after 40 hours in a single workweek, and in a handful of states it can start earlier in the day.

Everything below is that same multiplication applied to the rates people actually earn, plus the two places where the simple version stops being correct.

Overtime Rate Chart for 2026

| Hourly rate | Overtime rate (1.5x) | Extra premium per OT hour | 5 OT hours | 10 OT hours | 20 OT hours |

|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| $15.00 | $22.50 | $7.50 | $112.50 | $225.00 | $450.00 |

| $16.00 | $24.00 | $8.00 | $120.00 | $240.00 | $480.00 |

| $16.50 | $24.75 | $8.25 | $123.75 | $247.50 | $495.00 |

| $17.00 | $25.50 | $8.50 | $127.50 | $255.00 | $510.00 |

| $18.00 | $27.00 | $9.00 | $135.00 | $270.00 | $540.00 |

| $20.00 | $30.00 | $10.00 | $150.00 | $300.00 | $600.00 |

| $22.00 | $33.00 | $11.00 | $165.00 | $330.00 | $660.00 |

| $25.00 | $37.50 | $12.50 | $187.50 | $375.00 | $750.00 |

| $27.00 | $40.50 | $13.50 | $202.50 | $405.00 | $810.00 |

| $28.00 | $42.00 | $14.00 | $210.00 | $420.00 | $840.00 |

| $30.00 | $45.00 | $15.00 | $225.00 | $450.00 | $900.00 |

| $32.00 | $48.00 | $16.00 | $240.00 | $480.00 | $960.00 |

| $35.00 | $52.50 | $17.50 | $262.50 | $525.00 | $1,050.00 |

| $40.00 | $60.00 | $20.00 | $300.00 | $600.00 | $1,200.00 |

| $45.00 | $67.50 | $22.50 | $337.50 | $675.00 | $1,350.00 |

| $50.00 | $75.00 | $25.00 | $375.00 | $750.00 | $1,500.00 |

The "extra premium" column is worth knowing on its own: it is the half-time portion, and it is the number payroll teams use when they audit a week that was paid at straight time by mistake.

Where the Simple 1.5x Math Breaks

You earn more than your base rate. Shift differentials, non-discretionary bonuses, commissions and most incentive pay must be folded into your regular rate before the 1.5 multiplier is applied. If you make $16 an hour plus a $1.50 night differential, your overtime rate is 1.5 times about $17.50, not 1.5 times $16. The weighted average overtime guide shows the blend calculation.

Your state starts overtime earlier. California, Alaska, Nevada and Colorado use daily overtime triggers, so you can earn 1.5x after 8 hours in a day even in a short week, and California adds double time after 12 hours in a day. Check your own rules on the state overtime pages.

Reading Your Pay Stub Against the Chart

Take the overtime hours on your stub, multiply by the overtime rate in the chart, and compare it with the overtime dollars printed. Three mismatches show up most often: overtime paid at straight time, differentials left out of the regular rate, and hours moved between weeks so no single week crosses 40. The last one is not legal — the workweek is fixed, and hours cannot be shuffled to avoid the premium.

Run Your Exact Rate

The chart covers round numbers. For $16.90, $23.15 or any rate with your real hours, use the overtime pay calculator or the time and a half calculator. To see what lands in your bank account after withholding, run the gross figure through the paycheck calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is overtime for $15 an hour?

$22.50 per overtime hour. Ten overtime hours add $225 to your gross pay, and $75 of that is the premium above straight time.

What is time and a half for $16.50?

$24.75 an hour. The half-time premium is $8.25 for every overtime hour worked.

Is overtime always 1.5 times pay?

Federal law sets 1.5x as the floor after 40 hours. California requires double time past 12 hours in a day and past 8 hours on a seventh consecutive workday, and some union contracts pay double time on holidays or Sundays.

Do I get overtime for working over 8 hours a day?

Only in states with daily overtime rules — most notably California, Alaska, Nevada and Colorado. In the remaining states the trigger is 40 hours in the workweek, no matter how the hours are spread.

Is overtime taxed at a higher rate?

No. Overtime is ordinary wages. It can push a paycheck into a higher withholding bracket for that period, which makes the deduction look larger, but the tax rate on the hour itself is the same as your regular pay.

How much is overtime for $16 an hour?

$24.00 per overtime hour. Work 8 overtime hours in a week and you add $192 to gross pay, of which $64 is the half-time premium.

How much is overtime for $17 an hour?

$25.50 per overtime hour. A 45-hour week at $17 pays $680 regular plus $127.50 overtime — $807.50 gross.

How much is overtime pay at $18 an hour?

$27.00 per overtime hour. Ten overtime hours add $270 to the week, and $90 of that is the premium above straight time.

What does 1.5 overtime pay mean?

It is the federal time-and-a-half rate: your regular hourly wage multiplied by 1.5, owed for every hour past 40 in a workweek. The "1.5" is the multiplier, not a separate bonus — at $20 an hour, 1.5x pay is $30 an hour.

What is time and a half for $25 an hour?

$37.50 per overtime hour. A 45-hour week at $25 pays $1,000 regular plus $187.50 overtime — $1,187.50 gross.

What is time and a half for $27 an hour?

$40.50 per overtime hour. Ten overtime hours add $405 to the week, and $135 of that is the half-time premium.
