How time and a half works
Federal law (FLSA) requires non-exempt employees to receive at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. This is called "time and a half" because the overtime rate equals your regular pay plus half of it again.
Some states add extra rules. California, for example, also requires daily overtime after 8 hours and double time after 12 hours. Use our overtime pay calculator to apply your state's exact 2026 rules, or browse overtime calculators by state.
