Output Per Hour · Labor Cost Per Unit · OT Efficiency

Productivity Calculator

Output per hour is easy. The useful question is what an overtime hour actually costs you per unit once you pay 150% of the wage for less than 100% of the pace. Enter your numbers and see both sides.

The Formulas Behind The Numbers

Labor productivity = total output ÷ total hours worked.

Labor cost per unit = total labor cost ÷ total output.

Overtime effective cost multiplier = 1.5 ÷ overtime efficiency. At 85% efficiency, an overtime hour costs about 1.76× a regular hour per unit produced.

Labor share of revenue = total labor cost ÷ revenue produced × 100.

FTE equivalent = weekly hours ÷ 40 — useful when comparing overtime against a new hire.

Overtime or Another Hire?

Overtime wins when the spike is short, unpredictable, or seasonal, and when the work needs existing skill and context.

Hiring wins when overtime has run every week for a quarter, when error rates are climbing, or when the same few people are absorbing all of it.

Watch the third option: schedule design. Moving the workweek boundary or rebalancing shifts often removes overtime without removing hours.

Model the hours first with the work hours calculator, then read the scheduling and time tracking guide.
