Overtime Income: Turning Extra Hours Into a Yearly Number (2026)
How to calculate annual overtime income, what lenders accept as overtime for a mortgage, and why fixed bills should never be built on hours an employer can cancel.
Small Amounts, Large Totals
Six overtime hours a week feels like nothing much — an extra shift here, a late Friday there. At $26 an hour it is $234 gross a week, and across fifty working weeks it is $11,700. That is a used car, a year of childcare, or a third of a deposit, earned in slices small enough to disappear into everyday spending.
Seeing overtime as annual income changes two decisions: what you can borrow, and what you dare commit to monthly.
The Annual Formula
Annual overtime income = weekly overtime hours × hourly rate × 1.5 × weeks worked
The only input people get wrong is the last one. Almost nobody works 52 weeks. Holidays, unpaid leave, seasonal slowdowns and plant shutdowns all cut hours — and they cut *overtime* first, because overtime is the cheapest thing for an employer to withdraw.
Running the year at 48 or 50 weeks produces a figure you can plan against rather than a best case you touch once. The overtime income calculator handles the arithmetic and the after-tax side together.
What You Actually Keep
Overtime is ordinary income taxed at your marginal rate, so the more you earn, the smaller the share you keep. For most hourly workers, annual overtime survives at roughly 72 to 80 percent after federal tax, Social Security, Medicare and state tax.
| Annual overtime | Typical kept after tax |
| --- | --- |
| $4,000 | $3,100 – $3,300 |
| $8,000 | $6,100 – $6,500 |
| $12,000 | $9,000 – $9,700 |
| $20,000 | $14,700 – $16,000 |
Nothing here reduces your total pay: earning more never leaves you with less. But income-tested credits and benefits can taper, which is worth checking separately if you rely on them. The overtime tax calculator shows the withholding side hour by hour.
Overtime as Qualifying Income for a Loan
Lenders treat overtime as variable income, and variable income needs a history.
In practice, most underwriters will average your overtime across the last 12 to 24 months, and they want documentation: recent pay stubs showing year-to-date overtime, W-2s for the prior two years, and often a written statement from your employer that the overtime is expected to continue. A declining trend is usually averaged down or discounted entirely.
What this means practically: overtime that started three months ago will rarely count in full. Overtime you have earned consistently for two years usually counts close to the average. Bring the paperwork and your own calculation to the application — it shortens the conversation considerably.
The Budgeting Rule That Survives a Slow Quarter
Build every fixed cost — rent or mortgage, insurance, car payment, utilities, groceries — on base pay alone. Then give overtime income a specific job with a name: the credit card, the emergency fund, the deposit, the holiday.
The reason is simple. A budget that needs overtime to balance breaks in the exact month overtime disappears, which is also the month everything else feels tight. Naming the goal also makes the trade visible: "these forty hours buy the transmission" is a far better decision frame than "extra money."
Work backwards from the goal in the overtime planning calculator, and sanity-check individual checks in the overtime paycheck calculator.
When Overtime Income Is a Warning Sign
If overtime is more than about a quarter of your total income, you are financially exposed to one manager's staffing decision. Two questions are worth asking at that point.
Is the overtime structural — chronic understaffing that will continue — or is it a project with an end date? Structural overtime often means the employer is choosing premium hours over hiring, which is a position you can negotiate from.
And is the hourly trade still good? Compare the after-tax overtime rate against a base-rate increase, a shift with a differential, or a different employer entirely using the pay comparison calculator. Sometimes the answer is that a $2 raise beats every hour of overtime you are working.
Do This Once This Month
Pull your last three pay stubs, average the overtime hours, and run the annual figure. Then write down the single goal that money is for. Most people find the total larger than they expected and the destination vaguer than they would like — and fixing the second half is where overtime stops feeling wasted.
