The paycheck is where overtime becomes real
An overtime rate is a promise; a paycheck is the settlement. Between the two sit four deductions that behave differently. Social Security and Medicare take a flat bite from every overtime dollar. Federal and state withholding are projections based on the size of this particular check. Pre-tax deductions come out before the tax math, which is why a 401(k) contribution softens the sting of a big overtime period.
Overtime is per workweek, even on a biweekly check
This is the single most common payroll error on multi-week checks. Federal law fixes a seven-day workweek and tests each one separately against 40 hours. Averaging two weeks together to erase overtime is not allowed — a 50-hour week followed by a 30-hour week owes 10 overtime hours. Read what counts as a workweek before you accept a check that shows none.
How to audit your own stub in three minutes
Check three lines. Are overtime hours listed separately at 1.5 times the regular rate? Does the regular rate include shift differentials and non-discretionary bonuses, as the law requires? Do the hours match your own record of punches? Cross-check the tax side with the overtime tax calculator, the whole-paycheck view with the paycheck calculator, and your hours with the timesheet calculator.
