Salary vs overtime: the comparison that changes everything
A salary feels safe because the number is fixed. But fixed pay can hide a falling hourly rate when the week gets longer. A $65,000 salary at 40 hours a week is $31.25 an hour. At 55 hours a week it is $22.73 an hour — lower than many hourly craft and clerical roles that also earn time-and-a-half after 40 hours.
The honest way to compare offers is to put both into the same unit: effective pay per hour worked. Use the salary-to-hourly calculator for the salaried offer, the hourly-to-salary calculator for the hourly offer, and the pay-comparison calculator to see which one wins after taxes, benefits, and commute time.
If the salaried role is non-exempt, federal law still requires overtime at 1.5 times the regular rate. The employer must convert the salary back to hourly, divide by actual hours worked, and pay the half-time premium for every hour over 40. That is why the salary-to-hourly conversion is not just budgeting math — it is also a wage-and-hour compliance question.
Same salary, different hourly rate
$60,000 ÷ 40 hrs = $28.85/hr. $60,000 ÷ 55 hrs = $20.98/hr. The difference is a full workday of unpaid value every week.
When a raise costs money
A $5,000 raise that adds 10 unpaid hours a week can lower your effective hourly pay. Always divide the new salary by the new hours.
