Why the 2,080-Hour Shortcut Misleads Hourly Workers

The classic salary conversion — rate times 40 times 52 — assumes a perfectly clean year. Most hourly workers do not live in that year. They work overtime, take unpaid gaps between contracts, or pick up holiday premiums. A warehouse associate at $22 an hour with six steady overtime hours a week is not a $45,760 worker; they are a $56,000-plus worker, and their budget, loan applications, and job comparisons should use the real figure.

The reverse is also true. If your hours fluctuate, convert using the weeks you actually expect to work, not 52. For state-specific overtime rules — daily overtime in California, Alaska, Nevada, and Colorado — use the state overtime calculators, and read the hourly pay calculation guide for worked examples.
