Paid hours, not scheduled hours

A 45-hour schedule is not automatically five overtime hours. Half-hour unpaid meal breaks across five days remove 2.5 hours from the paid total, which leaves 42.5 paid hours and 2.5 overtime hours. That single adjustment is the most common reason an estimate and a pay stub disagree.

When the daily rule beats the weekly rule

Most of the country counts overtime only past 40 hours in a workweek. A handful of states also count it past 8 hours in a day, so four ten-hour shifts — 40 hours flat — still produce eight daily overtime hours. Set the daily threshold to 8 to see it, then confirm your own state's rule on the state overtime laws pages.

Turn hours into dollars

With the hour count settled, price it: the overtime wage estimator gives a slow-to-busy earnings band, the overtime paycheck calculator shows the net deposit, and the timesheet calculator rebuilds the week from real punches.
