Contractor Rate Versus Employee Wage

A $60 contract hour is not a $60 wage. The contractor pays both halves of Social Security and Medicare, buys their own insurance, funds their own time off, and earns no overtime premium for hour 41. Before accepting a 1099 role over a W-2 one, price those pieces in — a rate that looks generous can quietly pay less.

Compare the two sides with the W-2 calculator and the pay comparison calculator. Check the payroll-tax pieces in the Social Security tax calculator and Medicare tax calculator. The 1099 versus W-2 guide covers misclassification and overtime rights.
