There Is No Separate Overtime Tax

Overtime dollars are ordinary wages. They face the same federal income tax brackets, the same 6.2% Social Security, the same 1.45% Medicare and the same state rules as the rest of your check. Nothing in the tax code singles overtime out for a higher rate.

Why the Check Still Feels Over-Taxed

Withholding tables assume every period looks like the one in front of them. A big overtime week is annualized as if you earned that much all year, so it is withheld as if you were in a higher bracket. The extra is not lost — it comes back at filing. It just leaves that one check thinner than expected.

A Worked Overtime Week

$26 an hour, 50 hours, single filer, no state income tax:

| Line | Amount |

| --- | --- |

| Straight time (40 x $26) | $1,040.00 |

| Overtime (10 x $39) | $390.00 |

| Gross | $1,430.00 |

| Social Security (6.2%) | -$88.66 |

| Medicare (1.45%) | -$20.74 |

| Federal withholding (est.) | -$158.00 |

| Approximate net | $1,162.60 |

The 10 overtime hours added $390 gross and roughly $300 net. Run your own numbers in the overtime tax calculator.

Where You Live Changes the Answer

Nine states take no income tax on wages; others take a flat percentage, and a few run brackets of their own. Local city taxes apply in parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Missouri. Compare states on the state pages.

The "No Tax on Overtime" Question

Proposals to exempt overtime from federal income tax draw a lot of attention, and rules can change with the tax year. Social Security and Medicare would still apply to overtime wages under every version discussed so far. See what a change would mean for your check in the no tax on overtime calculator.

Keeping the Withholding Sensible

If overtime is steady rather than occasional, your Form W-4 is the lever: adjusting it spreads the tax across the year instead of hammering one check. Compare estimates with the federal tax calculator and the FICA calculator.
