The Short Answer

Time and a half for $25 an hour is $37.50 per hour. Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5 times their regular rate for every hour worked over 40 in a workweek. The math is simple: $25 × 1.5 = $37.50.

$25 an Hour Overtime Pay Examples

Here is what overtime adds to a $25-an-hour paycheck:

  • 5 overtime hours a week: 5 × $37.50 = $187.50 extra per week (about $9,750 a year)
  • 10 overtime hours a week: 10 × $37.50 = $375 extra per week (about $19,500 a year)
  • 15 overtime hours a week: 15 × $37.50 = $562.50 extra per week (about $29,250 a year)

A full week with 10 overtime hours pays $1,000 straight time (40 × $25) plus $375 overtime — $1,375 gross before taxes.

When You Might Earn More Than $37.50

Some states and employers pay above the federal minimum:

  • California requires double time ($50 per hour at this wage) after 12 hours in a workday, and daily overtime after 8 hours. See our California double time guide.
  • Alaska, Nevada and Colorado also have daily overtime rules — see which states pay daily overtime.
  • Some union contracts and company policies pay double time on Sundays or holidays, though federal law does not require it.

What Counts Toward Your Regular Rate

If you earn bonuses, shift differentials or commissions on top of $25 an hour, your overtime rate may be higher than $37.50. The FLSA requires most non-discretionary bonuses to be included in the regular rate before the 1.5 multiplier is applied. Read more in do bonuses count toward overtime.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is $37.50 the overtime rate before or after taxes?

Before taxes. Overtime pay is taxed as ordinary income — federal income tax, FICA (7.65% for most employees) and any state income tax still apply. Estimate your net with our take-home pay calculator.

Does overtime start after 8 hours a day or 40 hours a week?

Federally, only after 40 hours in a workweek. A few states add daily rules — California, Alaska, Nevada and Colorado are the main ones.

Can my employer pay a flat $25 for overtime hours instead?

No. If you are non-exempt, paying straight time for hours over 40 violates the FLSA, and you can recover the difference plus liquidated damages. See how to claim unpaid overtime.
