How to Use the Chart Without Getting Burned

A chart is only as accurate as the rate you feed it. Two things throw people off. First, unpaid meal periods: a scheduled 12-hour shift with a 30-minute lunch is 11.5 paid hours, so a five-shift week is 57.5 hours, not 60. Second, extra pay that rides along with your base rate — night differentials, weekend premiums, attendance bonuses — must be folded into the regular rate before the 1.5 multiplier applies.

Once the rate is right, the arithmetic never changes: straight time for the first 40 hours, 1.5x for every hour after. For a state-by-state version with daily thresholds included, use the state overtime calculators, or read the overtime pay by hourly rate guide for worked examples. If you also get 2x hours, price them with the double time calculator.
