When Double Time Actually Applies
Federal law stops at time and a half after 40 hours. Double time is layered on top by three sources: state law, a union contract, or a written employer policy. California drives most of the real-world cases — hours past 12 in a single workday, and hours past 8 on the seventh consecutive day worked in one workweek. A 14-hour California shift is 8 regular hours, 4 at 1.5x, and 2 at 2x.
Outside California, check your handbook before you count on 2x. Many employers pay double time voluntarily for holidays or emergency call-outs, and once it is written into a policy or contract, they generally have to honor it. For daily-overtime states, start at the state overtime calculators, then price the full week with the time and a half calculator.
