Why a bonus changes your overtime rate
Overtime is one and a half times your regular rate, and the regular rate is everything you earn for the week divided by the hours you worked. A promised bonus is earnings, so it lifts that divisor result — and with it every overtime hour in the period the bonus covers. The bonus itself is paid once; only the extra half is applied to overtime hours.
Promised or discretionary?
The dividing line is expectation. Attendance, production, safety, quality and target bonuses are announced in advance to change behaviour, so they count. A genuine surprise gift, with no formula and no promise, does not. Job titles and labels on the stub do not decide it — the promise does.
Retroactive true-ups
When a quarterly or annual bonus lands, overtime already paid in each of those weeks must be recalculated and topped up. Spread the bonus across the weeks it was earned, recompute the premium, and pay the difference. Model it here, then take a corrected week into the overtime wage estimator or the bonus tax calculator for the after-tax view.
