The Short Answer

Ten qualifying overtime hours pay 10 × your regular rate × 1.5. At a regular rate of $18, that is $270 in gross overtime wages. It is not automatically the pay for a ten-hour cleaning shift: whether the hours qualify depends on your workweek, state rules and employment circumstances.

The U.S. Department of Labor includes janitorial services in its maintenance-service industry guidance. Covered, non-exempt employees generally must receive at least time and a half for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. A job title or an employer calling you a contractor does not settle your legal classification.

Ten Overtime Hours Versus a Ten-Hour Shift

Suppose you earn $18 an hour, have no additional pay that changes your regular rate, and work 50 hours in one workweek:

  • First 40 hours: 40 × $18 = $720.
  • Ten overtime hours: 10 × $27 = $270.
  • Total weekly gross pay: $990, before deductions.

Now suppose you work only one ten-hour shift that week. Under the federal weekly rule, those ten hours ordinarily pay $180, not $270. If you already worked 35 hours before that shift, five hours complete the 40-hour threshold and five are overtime: $90 + $135 = $225 for the shift.

State daily overtime can change these examples. For an ordinary California ten-hour workday, absent an applicable exception or alternative workweek, eight hours at $18 plus two at $27 produce $198. Check daily overtime rules by state before applying federal-only math.

Cleaning Multiple Buildings for the Same Employer

Working at several customer buildings does not reset the weekly clock. If the same cleaning company sends you to three sites, combine your hours for that employer in its established workweek.

Travel between job sites during the workday is generally working time. Ordinary travel from home to your first site and from your last site home generally is not. Required loading, supply preparation and other work the employer permits may also count. Record the activity and the time rather than counting only minutes spent cleaning.

Hours for genuinely separate employers generally are not combined, but joint employment can require aggregation. If two companies share control over your work, seek guidance instead of assuming separate paychecks eliminate overtime.

Check the Rate as Well as the Hours

These examples assume your hourly wage equals your regular rate. Nondiscretionary attendance bonuses, certain incentives and different rates for different assignments may change that rate. Our bonuses and the overtime regular rate guide explains why using only the base wage can understate pay.

Compare your timesheet, workweek dates and pay stub. Ten overtime hours at $18 have a $270 full overtime value, including $180 of straight-time wages and a $90 additional premium. A stub can list those portions separately; do not add the $270 again if the ten hours' straight-time portion was already paid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every janitor receive overtime after eight hours?

Not under federal law alone. Daily thresholds depend on state law and applicable exceptions; federal overtime generally starts after 40 worked hours in a workweek for covered, non-exempt employees.

Does working overnight automatically mean time and a half?

No. Night premiums may come from an agreement or employer policy. Overnight timing alone does not trigger federal overtime.

What if I clean for ten overtime hours at $20?

If $20 is your regular rate, the overtime rate is $30 and those ten hours pay $300 gross. Add your other weekly earnings separately.

Check Your Own Cleaning Schedule
