How Walmart Calculates Overtime Pay: A 2026 Associate Guide
How Walmart pays overtime in 2026: the 40-hour FLSA rule, MyTime scheduling, holiday and Sunday pay, blended rate for shift differentials.
The Short Answer
Walmart calculates overtime the same way the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires every U.S. employer to: 1.5× your regular hourly rate for every hour worked over 40 in a single workweek. Walmart's workweek runs Saturday 12:00 AM through Friday 11:59 PM and is tracked through the MyTime scheduling system (formerly the GTA clock).
Walmart does *not* pay daily overtime in most states — if you work four 11-hour shifts (44 hours total), you get 4 hours of overtime, not 12. The exceptions are states with stricter laws: California (over 8/day or 40/week), Alaska, Nevada, and Colorado. In those states Walmart follows the state rule.
Walmart's "regular rate" for overtime includes your base wage plus shift differentials, MyShare bonuses, and other nondiscretionary pay, blended into a weighted average. That blended rate is then multiplied by 1.5 for any overtime hours.
How Walmart Defines a Workweek
The FLSA lets every employer set its own seven-day workweek as long as it's fixed and recurring. Walmart's standard workweek is:
- Start: Saturday at 12:00 AM
- End: Friday at 11:59 PM
That means a shift that begins Friday 8:00 PM and ends Saturday 4:00 AM is split across two workweeks for overtime purposes — the first four hours go on Week 1, the last four on Week 2. Many associates miss this when checking their pay stub.
The 40-Hour Rule and Why Daily Hours Don't Trigger Overtime
Outside of California, Alaska, Nevada, and Colorado, Walmart pays straight time for long single-day shifts. Four 10-hour shifts (40 hours) = zero overtime. Five 10-hour shifts (50 hours) = 10 hours of overtime at 1.5×.
Worked example: $17.50/hour associate
You're scheduled five 9-hour shifts (45 hours) at $17.50/hour:
- Regular pay: 40 × $17.50 = $700.00
- Overtime pay: 5 × $17.50 × 1.5 = $131.25
- Gross weekly pay: $831.25

How Shift Differentials and Bonuses Affect Overtime
Walmart pays shift differentials for overnight/freight shifts and runs the MyShare quarterly bonus program. Under FLSA §207(e), both have to be folded into the regular rate before overtime is calculated. The math:
- . Add all straight-time wages, shift differentials, and nondiscretionary bonuses for the week.
- . Divide by total hours worked → that's your *regular rate*.
- . Multiply hours over 40 by 0.5 × regular rate to get the overtime premium (the straight-time portion is already in step 1).
Worked example with $1.00 overnight differential
You work 45 hours at $17.50, with 20 of those hours on an overnight shift earning an extra $1.00/hour:
- Straight wages: 45 × $17.50 = $787.50
- Differential: 20 × $1.00 = $20.00
- Total straight-time: $807.50
- Regular rate: $807.50 ÷ 45 = $17.94/hour
- Overtime premium: 5 × $17.94 × 0.5 = $44.86
- Gross: $852.36
This is exactly the weighted average overtime calculation the IRS expects, and it's why a Walmart pay stub sometimes shows an "OT Premium" line instead of a flat 1.5× rate.
Holiday and Sunday Pay at Walmart
Walmart historically paid premium "Sunday pay" and holiday pay in some markets, but as of 2026:
- Federal holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.): Walmart pays straight time. The store is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas, so most associates won't work those days anyway.
- Sunday premium: phased out in nearly all states. Massachusetts and Rhode Island ended their statutory Sunday-pay requirements; Walmart's pay schedule now treats Sunday as a regular workday in those states.
- MyShare bonus: counts as nondiscretionary pay and gets blended into your regular rate (see above).
For the federal-law side of holiday pay, see holiday pay laws by state 2026.
How Walmart Handles Overtime in California
California associates get the strongest overtime protections in the country. Walmart applies the California rule:
- 1.5× after 8 hours in a day or 40 hours in a week
- 2.0× after 12 hours in a day
- 2.0× after 8 hours on the 7th consecutive workday in the same workweek

What to Check on Your Walmart Pay Stub
- . Workweek dates — confirm Saturday-to-Friday.
- . REG hours capped at 40. Anything above should appear on an OT line.
- . OT rate — should equal 1.5× your blended regular rate, not just your base rate, in weeks you earned MyShare or differentials.
- . W-2 Box 14 (QOT) at year-end — for the 2025–2028 federal No Tax on Overtime deduction. See what is qualified overtime compensation.
- . Split shifts crossing midnight Friday/Saturday — the hours should land in two different workweeks.
What If Walmart Underpays Your Overtime?
The first step is to use MyTime → Time-Off / Adjustments] to request a punch correction with your store's people lead. If that doesn't resolve it, you can file a confidential complaint with the U.S. Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division at [dol.gov/agencies/whd — the FLSA prohibits retaliation for filing.
FAQ
Does Walmart pay overtime after 8 hours a day?
Only in California, Alaska, Nevada, and Colorado, where state law requires daily overtime. In the other 46 states, Walmart pays overtime only after 40 hours in a single workweek.
