Elapsed Time Is Not Always Paid Time
The span between punching in and punching out is elapsed time. Paid time is what remains after bona fide meal periods come out — and only those. Short rest breaks, waiting that you spend on the employer's terms, and required changing or security screening that is integral to the job generally stay inside paid time.
Once you have the weekly total, the premium rules take over. Anything past 40 hours in the workweek earns time and a half federally, and daily thresholds arrive sooner in states like California and Alaska.
